    COMMENTARY

    Command Section:

Major Howard G Clayville arrived this station 4 May 1964. He assumed command from Major Harold M Ludlow Jr., Acting Commander, on 4 May 1964.

A dining-in was held 16 June 1964. The guest speaker was Dr. Gordon W Thomas, Superintendent of the Grenfell Mission. Other guests were Colonel Myers, GADS HQ, Lt. Col. Anderson, GADS HQ and Captain Hollenbeck, Sector Chaplains Office.

    Operations Section:

This section participated in five (5) live and twelve (12) simulated missions.

Lt. Joseph L Vojir departed PCS on 5 May 1964.

    Civil Engineer Activities:

The CE Shops performed normal maintenance and assisted the GEEIA Team with the work in the towers. The heating plant performed normal preventative maintenance and had internal inspection of two boilers. The power plant performed normal preventative maintenance with no major breakdowns. The contract with Canadian Marconi Company for a Diesel Power Technician has expired. 8th AF Mobile Maintenance Team arrived this quarter and have completed 85% of the Ric-Wil water line.

    Fire Department:

All normal fire prevention was carried out during this quarter. Special emphasis was placed on the duties of the Area Fire Marshals and the Building Fire Wardens.

    Motor Pool:

All normal vehicle maintenance was carried out during this quarter. The engine of the station bus sent to Corner Brook for contract maintenance under the warranty due to a breakdown of the bus on a trip from Harmon AFB to St. Anthony AS. The Motor Pool is awaiting instructions for the disposition of the vehicle that was involved in the accident this quarter. Total mileage put on vehicles this quarter was 13,244 miles with a fuel usage of 1,975 gallons, for an average of 6.65 miles per gallon of fuel.

    Transportation:

Airlift was made by contract aircraft with the following listed quantities being airlifted during this quarter:

    Communications and Electronics:

General – In addition to the normal maintenance and operational activities, the following special projects and activities were initiated or completed during this period:

S/Sgt. Leroy Turner and A/1C Donald Nichols were TDY to AFM 66-1 and TO 00-20E-1 Familiarization Course at Goose AB, Labrador, from 29 April to 17 May 1964.

The KW-7 crypto scheme was postponed until 1 October 1964. Later information from GADS postpones this scheme indefinitely due to equipment trouble.

During April, Mr. Sid Trimble, GADS CTSP continued giving classes to maintenance and operations personnel on the AN/FPS-6 and OA-2325. He taught maintenance personnel preventative maintenance routines (PMI’s) on both units and was helpful in a tech assist capacity during GEEIA and MDA installation. Mr. Trimble left on 8 May 1964.

On 23 April, Mr. Harvey Jones, with 4 men, arrived as tech assist to GEEIA to DLM the AN/FPS-6. Mr. Jones and the team left on 12 May 1964. The quality of the DLM was average or below. Sector and GEEIA have been informed of this.

Mr. Thomas Anderson arrived on 20 April for the Pre-DLM on the AN/FPS-20A. The team arrived on 22 May for the DLM and finished on 12 June. The team left on 15June. The quality of the DLM was good.

On 11 May, Captain Gordon C Waddle, GADS, arrived for an inspection on the installation progress of both radar sets. His report has been sent to the squadron and answered by the squadron CEM Officer.

On 28 May, Mr. Richard Townsend, GADS CTSP arrived to conduct maintenance and operations classes on the AN/FPS-20A and AN/UPX-14. He has also taught maintenance personnel the PMI’s on the units. He is giving tech assist as needed on both units and has been of great help.

During 25 to 28 May, Mr. Smith, MDA, overhauled the AN/GPX-7A and the AN/UPX-6 units. Both sets of units were in very poor condition after he finished and had to be reworked by squadron personnel. Mr. Anderson, MDA, said that Mr. Smith would return in July to rework all the units.

The GEEIA outside construction team recaulked the AN/FPS-6 radome from 2 June to 9 June. The radome was caulked again from 13 June to 15 June because it was leaking. The radome was discovered leaking a second time and GEEIA was informed of this. This will be a major exception to the AN/FPS-6 acceptance. Lt. Waterman of GEEIA said the final caulking will be done by approximately 19 August, by a team at Harmon AFB, Newfoundland.

The GEEIA outside construction team took the AN/FPS-6 antenna down on 2 June to remove the pedestal support blocks which were not used with this type of tower. The antenna was re-erected by 5 June.

The AN/FPS-3 was taken off the air on 15 June for conversion to an AN/FPS-20A. The conversion was done by the GEEIA installation team with tech assist from Mr. Itterman, MDA. On 19 June, GEEIA discovered they needed a gear reducer, shims and an azimuth drive motor for the antenna. These were ordered and the gear reducer arrived from CMC, St. John’s, Newfoundland on 25 June. The other parts had not arrived as of 30 June.

Maintenance Control and Materiel Control Centers:

On 5 May, the remaining four pieces of test equipment sent our for calibration were received from Canadian Marconi, St. John’s, Newfoundland.

On 6 May, we received several additional pieces of test equipment through supply that had been ordered for the new radar sets.

On 26 June, Mr. Ray Mulcahy and Mr. Robert Austin arrived from CMC, St. John’s to calibrate and repair test equipment. They will do approximately 40 pieces of equipment and expect to be done by 17 July.

During June, Materiel Control moved into the old radar maintenance office and began to unify its operations. Plans and lists were made for each bench stock, standby components, tool cribs and additional test equipment. All necessary items have been ordered, and are awaiting delivery.

    Radar Maintenance:

Mr. Joe Wilson, GADS Technical Representative completed installation, modification, and instruction on the AN/GPS-T4 trainer. The unit was accepted on 6 April. Mr. Wilson left on 7 April.

Installation of the AN/GPA-30 mapper for the AN/FPS-20A is awaiting GEEIA approval and several parts. Once these are obtained, the unit will be installed in the radar trainer room.

26th Air Division has notified the squadron that two AN/UPA-35 indicators are being shipped to us. The first one is due approximately 15 August. Plans have been coordinated with Operations on location.

The AN/GPX-7A and AN/UPX-6 IFF/SIF equipment was relocated from the upper dias to the trainer room on 15-16 June. The move was done with the minimum break in operations. The move has proven effective in lowering the temperatures around the equipment to increase their reliability.

During June the radar maintenance work center moved to the second deck, tower #1. This enables them to be right with the equipment and relieves the crowded conditions in operations.

    Radio Maintenance:

On 5 May, Mr. Pike from CMC, St. John’s, Newfoundland, arrived for a Pre-DLM on the outside Wire Plant and the GATR antenna farm. A copy of his report has been received and the DLM is due in August.

Radio maintenance is attempting to rebuild three C-806 remote control units for the AN/GRC-27’s in order to equip all the multi sets with remote capability. If the units cannot be repaired, new ones will be ordered.

No word has been received from GEEIA or 26th Air Division on the requested move of the GATR site in the AN/FPS-502 tower.

    Wire and Teletype Maintenance:

Additional rewiring and consolidation of wiring under the dias was begun in June and is progressing satisfactorily. We expect to eliminate many problem areas by this rewiring.

    Communications Center:

Plans are being made to connect high frequency receivers to a teletype unit in the communications center. The receivers will pick up UPI news 24 hours a day giving the squadron additional news capability.

Plans for panelling the communications center are complete and we are awaiting the material.

    Personnel:

The overall CEM manning as of 30 June 1964 was 92% (39 authorized, 36 assigned).

The following is personnel changes for the quarter:
