Access Roads
Gap Filler Radar Stations

Due to the high cost experienced to date of constructing some of the access roads to the Gap Filler Radar Stations, where rock excavation was involved, the method of providing access to the sites not previously under contract will be revised. It is now proposed to have the general contractor bid a lump sum for the construction of the site and access to it from the nearest existing road. It will be the responsibility of the general contractor to select the best route for his own requirements. When the construction is nearly completed, the access route used by the contractor will be assessed for the use by tracked vehicles and if necessary improved.

It is requested that all other directorates involved in this programme be advised of this revised concept of access road construction.
