Evaluation & Approval of Siting Reports
Gap Filler Radar Stations - Various Relocated

At a meeting in ATSC Conference Room on 3 Nov 59, the CTel/ATSC Evaluation and Approval Committee reviewed the siting reports for the following Gap Filler Radar Stations:

  1. Brampton Relocated
  2. London Relocated
  3. Westport Relocated

All three siting reports were not approved as the representatives of DRDP and DADR stated that the coverage did not meet the operational requirements to fill the gap.

For record purposes, the following action had been taken prior to the siting team leaving for the field:

  1. Original interference study by E in C and establishment of area of no-interference.

  2. Site selection by ATSC with one or more alternatives within area of no-interference.

  3. Restudy of interference by E in C at selected sites with agreement or rejection.

  4. Briefing of siting team to survey the site or sites indicated on a Topographic Map with no deviation. Siting team did make minor relocations in the field for improvements which were not apparent on the maps.

From a further review of these siting reports, it is apparent that in most cases poor coverage is caused by trees within 1 to 2 miles and it is possible that maximum coverage could be obtained by removing the trees or constructing a higher tower. It is also noted that the screening angles and coverage diagram were not adjusted for the higher elevation at which would be the center of the radar equipment.

F/O RJ Brabbs, CTel/DCom, stated that in the case of Westport Relocated Site #2, it was possible to see the horizon from the ground except in a small sector in the NW quadrant.
